First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Menards.
Java Software Engineer
It started with a short phone interview. After that, I was invited to interview at Menard Inc. in Eau Claire. First, there was a computerized aptitude test for general computer science skills, which was pretty easy. Then came a computerized Java aptitude test covering very basic Java concepts like primitives, definitions, and reserved words. Finally, I had an interview with three engineers and the recruiter where they asked a lot of questions about my current schoolwork and projects, and also about any gaps in my schooling and employment.
- Which course did you find most challenging?
- Tell me about your current school classwork and projects.
- Can you explain any gaps in your schooling or employment?

I applied at a job fair on campus and then had a 20 minute phone interview. After that, they asked me to come in for an on-site interview. The on-site started with a two hour test which included a 5 part test covering logic, math, spelling, and pattern recognition. Then there was a 50 question Java-specific test about keywords, identifiers, classes, and other Java concepts. After the testing, I had a quick 20 minute face-to-face interview with two staff members where they asked about my Java knowledge, classes I've taken, and career goals. This on-site was the final step, and the whole process took about 2.5 weeks.

So there were two interviews. First up was a 30 min skype call to check if I was interested and qualified. That was with the manager's managers and HR. Then, I had an in-person interview at the actual office. That one was with the folks who would be my direct supervisors, plus HR again.
- What is your expected tenure at our company?
