It started with emails and then phone calls with HR. They asked for my transcripts, references, and recommendation letters. After a few weeks, I got an email about the selection process and being matched with a lab or department. I was given a list of mentors and project proposals. I sent my preferences back, which were likely matched with the mentors' preferred interns. Once that was done, I got an email saying I was accepted into the program. Then there was a bunch of paperwork, immunization, and background checks to do. Finally, I had an interview with the direct supervisor who would be in charge of me.

They asked questions about my resume and qualifications, and also about my past experience. I had to explain why I am interested in the position and why I think I would be a good candidate for the job. They asked about my familiarity with the field and with the software programming that I would be using in the job. They explained a lot about what is expected of the position and how it is different from other roles. The interviewer told me about the mission of the office and the research goal, and also provided some background on why the research is being done.

It was a 3-round interview process. The HR interview felt pretty useless. The team was good and I could see myself working with them. It was a really competitive process though.
