Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Medical University of South Carolina.
Registered Nurse
I applied for the nurse residency program at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. The experience was okay, not amazing but not bad either. It took about 4 weeks to get a response about an interview. All the interviews were done over Zoom. They only asked nursing situational questions. For example, "tell me about a time that you had a conflict in the workplace." It was hard to seem personable through this process.
- Describe a situation where you encountered workplace conflict and how you handled it.
- Can you share an instance of a communication barrier you faced and how you resolved it?
Registered Nurse
I was contacted by the unit secretary to set up an interview with the management team. My first interview was with the three managers for the unit (one manager and two assistant managers). It felt pretty relaxed, and they started by asking me to introduce myself. I felt like the management interview was quite self-directed, as long as I had a clear idea of what I wanted to communicate. The next part was a peer interview with two staff nurses from the unit, where I was asked typical behavioral questions like 'tell me about a time when...'. I got a call back about a week later with a potential start date.
- Can you share an instance of a conflict you had with a coworker and describe how you resolved it?
- Describe a situation where you encountered a conflict with a colleague and explain your approach to resolving it.
Registered Nurse
I had a panel interview with staff and managers. It was an average interview process. First, I talked to the unit manager one-on-one, then with a mixed panel. It was a good chance for them to meet me and for me to ask questions. I heard back from the unit in two weeks and started a month later in an orientation group. Before working on the unit, I had to do an on-site health assessment and drug screen.
- Tell me about your experience and why you want to work here.
- What was one thing that they asked you?
