First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MCG Health.
Senior Data Engineer
The interview process was really slow, had to keep following up to schedule interviews. They had a screening test with pandas coding which is weird since most interviews are leetcode or general data manipulation now. Two of the four people on the hiring panel were super rude. One kept asking what I'd use to get the same results from a SQL query for the top 10 rows, expecting knowledge of the SQL rand() function, which isn't used daily by data engineers. This interviewer cut the interview short for another call. The other interviewer was also rude, smirking like he was way smarter than me. He said I should ask questions during a scenario problem. When I did, he'd say 'I already told you this' and repeat himself without clearly asking what he wanted. It felt like they already hired someone and wasted my time. Rude people, don't bother with this company.
- Regarding SQL window functions, can you explain the rand function?
Product Manager
So, I had 5 interviews and also a case study for this job. A recruiter reached out to me first. Then, I had an interview with the recruiter, who was great. After that, it was a behavioral interview with the hiring manager. Then, I got a take-home product management case study that I had to do in about 1-2 hours. The next interview was a panel with a product owner, an associate director of software engineering, and a Sr. Product Manager, with the hiring manager just watching. They asked me about the case study and some behavioral stuff. Then I had a behavioral interview with the VP of Product where they asked me about product management to see how I think. Finally, I had a behavioral interview with the Director of Product.
- When dealing with feature tradeoffs, how do you approach the decision-making process?
- What factors do you consider when deciding on feature prioritization?
- Can you share an instance where you utilized product data to inform business strategy?
Event Manager
I was contacted on LinkedIn for an initial phone screen with the recruiter. We scheduled the call for that week, and it was a really in-depth discussion about my background and experience. I was told I'd be advanced to the next stage, which involved completing an SAT-style assessment that supposedly doesn't affect my candidacy. After finishing the assessment, the recruiter reached out to set up my hiring manager screen. Then, unexpectedly, my screen was canceled, and I got an automated rejection email with no explanation. It was pretty disappointing to be blindsided with a rejection after being told I was moving forward.
- Can you discuss the budgets you have experience managing?
- What were the sizes of the events you've handled?
- Tell me about your experience with various event-related details.
Software Engineer
Got contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn and applied through her. The next morning, there was a phone screening. The following day, I had a video screening with the hiring manager and set up the final interview for next Monday with the Synapse team. The final interview involved behavioral questions with three team members, followed by a technical interview with another three team members. It was a really positive experience, not too difficult. Honestly, it's one of the best interview processes I've encountered. For the technical part, they told me to treat it like a normal workday where I could use Google, Stack Overflow, API documentation, or anything else I needed to complete the tasks. It's basically peer programming, so communication about my thought process is key.
- Questions about data structures and algorithms.
- Discussed Binary Tree Traversal.
- Explored API design.
