First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Maxim Integrated.
Process Engineer
The interview process started with a phone call where we talked about my past experience, my expertise, and if I was interested in the job. They also asked me some behavioral questions, like how I would handle pressure. After that, I had an on-site interview that lasted about half a day and included 4-5 interviews. Four of these were technical, and the last one was with the site's Managing Director, which felt like a formality. I also had lunch with a manager, and surprisingly, he asked me some technical questions during lunch, so be ready for that. My manager met me at the end and basically told me I was selected. I had to get my medical tests done the same day.
- What are your thoughts on the technicalities of operating several machines?
- Given some worst-case scenarios, how would you troubleshoot them?
Process Engineer
Applied online and the initial contact and arranging process was fairly disorganized. The manager took 3 months to first contact me. After a phone call and phone interview, I was scheduled to travel for an onsite interview the following week. I received sporadic email contact for 1.5 more months before an offer finally arrived, with generally positive, verbal indications of intent to hire. The manager wanted a start date of 3 weeks from offer receipt, but given a 2-person relocation, I arranged for 1 more month.
- Can you describe the data generated during your thesis?
Reliability Engineer
First, there's a phone call where they'll hit you with some general semiconductor device physics questions. After that, it's an on-site gig with three back-to-back 1:1s with the engineers, each lasting 30-45 minutes. They'll grill you on BJTs and MOSFETs, plus some ideal op-amp stuff.
- Regarding intrinsic silicon conductivity and temperature, how does it change? Explain p-n junction functionality. What's a method to speed up transistor switching?
- Can you describe what CMOS latchup is?
- Sketch out the non-inverting and inverting amplifier circuits. If we assume an ideal op-amp, derive the voltage gain.
