First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mattress Firm.
Manager
I applied online and the whole thing took about 2 weeks. I had an interview at Mattress Firm in October 2015. Got an email to set up a phone interview, which I did. The lady called right on time and it seemed to go okay. I asked her about daily tasks and if managers work alone often. She asked about my background and gave me some situation questions, like asking for an example of going above and beyond for a customer. It was about 15 minutes. She said I'd hear from a district or regional manager in about a week. But two weeks passed, no call or email. Still nothing. It was surprising given how many jobs they have open. I have over 20 years in customer service, sales, and management, but some companies take forever to find their 'perfect' candidate.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded expectations for a customer?
- What is your motivation for seeking employment with Mattress Firm?
- What are your thoughts on working approximately 50 to 60 hours per week?
Manager-In-Training
I applied twice, the first time about 1.5 years before the second. The first interview was in person, about an hour's drive away. I thought it went great, but they didn't move forward with me. The second time, I did an online video submission where I answered questions with time and practice limits. I stopped practicing after a while and just answered them. I ignored the suggestion to dress casually and wore a button-down shirt and tie. A week later, they emailed me to say I was moving on to a live interview in my area. They hired me because I had researched their sales approach and company culture beforehand. I visited over two stores, spoke with staff for a long time, took notes, and memorized key terms like 'closing,' 'guest,' and 'sleep issues.' During the live interview, I tried to 'close' the deal by assuming I had the job and asking when I should start. It worked, as that's precisely what they're looking for.
- What's your strategy for handling a phone call from a guest experiencing an issue with their purchase?
- Describe how you'd manage a situation where you're the only staff member and multiple groups of guests enter the store consecutively.
Management
The interview process was very open. It kicked off with a 30-minute phone interview where the interviewer shared about herself, her company experience, and the company culture. Her questions focused on my past experiences and how they'd fit into the culture. The in-person interview lasted over an hour because I was the last one interviewed that day, allowing us to discuss questions and answers more deeply. They were very open about the pay structure, which is commission-based and important, as well as the culture. There seems to be a lot of potential for growth and advancement for those who align with the company culture.
- Can you share your proudest achievement from your previous management roles?
