Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MathWorks.
Application Engineer
The interviewers were really smart and talented people. The whole process was exhausting. I had to give a presentation about my background and why I think I'm a good fit for the role. Then there were several one-on-one interviews.
- Can you explain why you are the right candidate for this position?
Applications Engineer
Got referred by someone at MathWorks. First, there were two phone interviews, pretty chill and mostly not technical. Then, I went onsite for a full day of interviews. The day started with me giving a presentation about my past work and experience, which took about 30-45 minutes. After that, I met with several people from the team – sales, managers, engineers. These chats were mostly casual, just to get to know me. I think doing a really good presentation can make the one-on-one interviews a bit easier. Finally, I had a chat with HR about the usual stuff and some behavioral questions like 'Why MathWorks?'. The whole experience was really nice because everyone I met was super friendly.
- Tell us about your past and relevant experience.
- What makes you want to work for MathWorks?
- What's prompting your job search?
Applications Engineer
It was a two round process. The first was an HR round over the phone, lasting 30 minutes. They asked basic questions like what you'd do during a team conflict, how you handle multitasking, and about your past projects, challenges, and solutions. The second round was a technical phone interview for 45 minutes. They asked about the pigeon hole principle and a color problem. You had to pick 3 programming languages from C/C++/Java/MATLAB and got simple questions about inheritance and references.
- In the event of a team conflict, what would be your course of action?
- Describe your approach to managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Can you elaborate on the projects you've undertaken, including the challenges encountered and how you addressed them?
