The first step was a get-to-know-each-other meeting to understand what both sides want. Even though the job posting and application were in English, the interview was conducted entirely in German, with no option to switch. This makes sense as the role requires German fluency, but it's a big drawback for discussing technical subjects, which are usually in English. The interviewer was the team lead, so it wasn't an HR person. The interview was going well, except for a couple of points: they prefer everyone in the office and expect a return as soon as the pandemic is over. This is inconvenient for people living in Munich, as the office in Ismaning is far and poorly connected by public transport (1 hour trip, 25 mins by car). Since most of the work can be done remotely, commuting could be tough for those without a car. Salary expectations were also discussed; I gave a range, but didn't get any feedback on their range. I found it odd to be asked about salary so early on. Customer relations are handled entirely remotely, with no fieldwork, which is another reason why working from home would be suitable.

The whole thing took about 3 months, starting in early September and ending in late December. I applied online for the EDG role. About a week later, I got a link to answer some background questions recorded via webcam. Then, two weeks after that, they sent an online assessment where I had to pick 2 languages (C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab) to complete it. Another two weeks passed, and then I had a phone interview. They asked about OOP basics, some math stuff, and code review questions like 'what's the output?' or 'can it compile?'. Two weeks after that, an HR phone interview happened with all behavior questions. Then, a week later, HR asked for 3 references for a background check and called to ask about my immigration status. Sadly, I got rejected in the end. The whole process just took way too long.
