First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Materion.
R&D Engineer
The person I spoke with told me a lot about the company and the reason for the opening. Overall, it felt good, though the interview went on for a bit. It began with asking for a self-introduction, then moved to questions about my final year project and my motivation for applying.
- Tell me about your final year project in university.
Process Engineer
Got a message from HR to set up an interview call. Had a call with HR, and she set up an interview with the Manager. The Manager conducted a 15-minute phone interview and then invited me to visit the company. HR then scheduled a company visit where I met with 6 people for about 3 hours; it all went really well, and the people were very kind and smart. Had a final call with HR, the Hiring Manager, and the Plant Manager. Received an offer from HR. Completed the background check, drug test, and physical exam. After everything cleared, I got an email from HR with my start date.
- Can you share details about your past experience and any projects you've worked on?
- What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What motivated you to apply to Materion?
Manager
The first interview was great, I learned about the role and department's challenges. Then, a second interview that was a brainstorming session. I then spoke with the interviewer's manager for a third interview, also with great energy and brainstorming. I was told to expect an offer by end of day and then do paperwork for references and background checks. I did the paperwork and was waiting for the offer. The next business day, I got an email asking for my availability for a fourth interview. I withdrew because I had another offer from a faster process and couldn't wait any longer.
- What specific challenges do you see in this industry?
- Can you elaborate on your strategy and planning approaches?
Human Resources Generalist
I applied for the Human Resources Generalist role and got a call for a screening/phone interview about a week later. A week after that, they called me to set up a three-hour in-person interview. The first round used standard behavioral questions. The second round also had scripted behavioral questions, many of which were repeated from the first round. They didn't explain the job details much, just that there were a few open positions. However, they did clearly state the requirement to wear provided uniforms and shower daily. The HR department seemed large for the company's size and could potentially be smaller.
- Tell me about a time you realized you made a mistake. How did you identify it and what did you do to fix it?
- Describe a situation where you observed an employee or vendor acting unsafely. How did you address it and resolve the issue?
