First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Intern
I applied through their website and got the offer before December. The process was pretty straightforward with two people on the interview panel. I initially got a call from a recruiter about my interest in the role.
- Could you tell us about yourself?
- Can you share some details about your previous experience?
- Do you have a driver's license?
Highway Engineer
The interview was in person, pretty laid back, chill hiring manager. We connected really good on previous projects and he was impressed by a niche skill I had using a software. There was a follow up interview by the hiring manager where he showed the types of work they are doing and if I still wanted to continue for the position.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- Could you elaborate on your resume?
- Can you tell me about your past projects?
Operational Analyst
The interview process has three parts. First, there's a phone call where they'll chat about your background, resume, skills, and if you're a good fit. Then, you'll talk with a manager who wants to know more about your past projects and how they match the job. Lastly, you'll meet the team to see how you collaborate and your people skills, and they'll also ask more about your projects and experience to make sure you fit with the team. It's all about your projects and work history to see if you're right for the role.
- Tell me about your experience using Tableau.
- Can you share your experience developing dashboards?
Engineering and Project Management
Interviews usually involve about 10 questions asked by 3 panel members who noted down responses. Generally, no feedback was given. As an internal candidate, I sometimes found out who got the job (due to the union contract). The notification letter often stated the selected person was 'more experienced or more qualified.' For some time, under one manager, this seemed to be based on seniority, then under another, on personal friendships (hiring external friends). A later manager attempted to improve the advancement process but faced management-labor impasses.
- Tell me about your experience with technical and procedural project development and design phases.
- Can you expand on your work with the Project Design and Development Guide?
- Can you discuss your involvement with the Bridge Manual?
