Registered Nurse
So I started the interview with some general questions about my background and experience. They gave me some info about the job. But then it got weird, they kept asking about my spouse's job, which was military related. They wanted to know the branch, the base, if they were staff or a student there, and stuff like that. After all that, the manager said they didn't want someone who might move. Even though I knew the tech and patient stuff and had nursing experience, it seems like my spouse's job was the main reason they didn't hire me. I'd tell other military spouses to maybe look somewhere else.
- Can you tell me about your patient care experience and your experience with our charting system, and how you stay current with evidence-based practice?
- Could you explain why you live in this area and what your spouse's occupation is?
Manager
I was first contacted by the hiring manager. After a brief discussion of my credentials, HR scheduled an in person interview. I am out of state, but they wanted me to make it the following week, so I did. As soon as I got there, other managers, who would be my peers, were waiting. I interviewed with them for about 2 hours. After that, interviewed with the MDs and 3 subordinates. Everything went well. One supervisor, who thought she had it all together, asked an inappropriate question, trying to figure out how old I was. I fully believe there was age discrimination at play as I have a young appearance. It obviously made them feel uncomfortable that I have a higher degree, more experience, and am somehow younger than them. Never thought being an over achiever would be a bad thing. The hiring manager acted as if I had the job, disclosing some very personal details. To top it off, I was assured I'd be reimbursed for the travel expenses (plane, car rental) and basically had to beg HR for the reimbursement. Over 2 months went by before I received the check... Crazy, right?! In the end, I am over qualified for the position, so everything works out :)
- Can you share an instance where you resolved a conflict?
- One supervisor asked an inappropriate question about my age.
Physical Therapist
The candidate talks with some managers to make sure they would fit in the hospital's culture. They asked questions about real scenarios to check problem-solving skills and clinical knowledge. Since the job was home health, they also asked about teamwork, working alone in homes, and being okay with communicating remotely. The questions were good and relevant, but not the usual generic ones.
- Can you share an instance of a challenging patient encounter and how you managed it?
Medical Scribe
So, for the medical scribe job, first you'll chat with the department manager on the phone. Then, there's an interview. If that goes well, they'll give you a book on medical terms to study. To actually get the job, you gotta ace the test, scoring 80% or higher.
- What do you know about medical terms?
- Have you used electronic health records (EHR) before?
- How good are you at juggling multiple tasks?
