First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Marshall Retail Group.
Sales Associate
They’ll start by asking why you think you should work at Marshall’s and what motivates you to apply. Since they often hire for weekend shifts or roles requiring open availability, be prepared to discuss your schedule. They’ll also inquire about your background and any prior experience you have in retail or customer service positions.
- Tell me about why you are interested in working at Marshalls.
Accountant
A recruiter reached out initially and then I was referred to the team. The assistant controller and director interviewed me. They were open about the company's current state, mentioning the balance sheet was disorganized due to a recent merger. The interview wasn't structured with set questions; it was more of a free-flowing discussion about my responsibilities in previous and current jobs. A disappointing part was the recruiter misrepresented the position as hybrid, while the interviewers stated it's an in-office role. This was confusing as the interviewers themselves were working from home. I made it clear that a daily office commute is a dealbreaker for me.

Visual Merchandiser
I'm an Asian female with over 10 years of experience in sales and creative fields, mostly in luxury department stores and with vendors. I applied for a Visual Merchandiser role and was contacted by HR for a phone interview with the hiring regional visual manager. The first interview, a phone call, started 10 minutes late. I felt it went well because I answered all her questions thoroughly, so she scheduled a video FaceTime interview for the next week. On the scheduled day, I was prepared and dressed professionally. After waiting 15 minutes, I thought she had forgotten, but then at 20 minutes past the scheduled time, she called via FaceTime. She was casually dressed and in a noisy train station during the call. I felt judged immediately, possibly due to my race or features, and sensed I wouldn't be hired based on her initial impression. She asked the usual questions about my fit for the job, which I answered thoroughly and professionally, maintaining a cheerful and personable demeanor. Despite what I felt was a good interview, I believe I was judged unfairly and discriminated against based on my race or features, making my experience, portfolio, and interview efforts feel like a waste of time. Overall, a horrible experience.

Assistant Buyer
I applied online but didn't get a response for three weeks. Then, the hiring manager called me for two phone interviews. The first was to go over the job details, and the second was to get to know me better. After that, I had an in-person interview that included a 30-minute retail math test. During the in-person meeting, they asked if a drug test would be an issue, and I said no. The following week, I took a drug test, passed it, and then got offered the job over the phone. It was super fast, but I'm really thankful for the chance.
- You'll have to do a 30-minute retail math test during the in-person interview, so bring a calculator. It's pretty basic, and you should aim to get 90% correct.
- Anyone interviewing for an Assistant Buyer role should be able to ace this retail math test.
