Event Manager
The interview process took a long time to start, but once it did, it moved really fast, even during the holidays. They said they'd decide by a certain day, but I didn't hear back for two weeks and had to chase them for an update. I got a verbal offer and asked for a signing bonus because the salary was lower than I wanted and I'd be losing a bonus at my current job. I mentioned that accepting wasn't dependent on the bonus, but it would be nice. The whole offer call was only 3 minutes and felt very impersonal. The next day, the offer was rescinded abruptly in a 2-minute call. When I asked why, they just said we didn't see eye to eye and wouldn't explain further. I'm really unimpressed with the director I interviewed with and spoke to about the offer. While she has event experience, she lacks leadership and people management skills, which is obvious. The whole thing has left a bad taste and felt really unprofessional. The recruiter I initially worked with was great though, and the only one who gave me closure when I reached out after. She said they couldn't match my counteroffer and decided not to proceed. That was more info than 'we didn't see eye to eye'.
- Can you share an instance where you foresaw a problem and resolved it proactively?
Event Coordinator
I applied online and HR called me about a week later to set up an in-person interview with the assistant manager at the hotel. The interview was really casual and the interviewer was super nice. It was the most relaxed interview I've ever had, very conversational. Mostly STAR/tell me about a time when questions, with a focus on time management. It was only about 30 minutes. I got a call a week and a half later from the same person. They chose an internal candidate, but he offered to send my resume to another Marriott hotel looking for the same role because he thought I was a good candidate. Hopefully, I can get the job at the other location.
- Tell me about your time management skills and how you handle conflicting deadlines.
- What makes you want to work for Marriott and specifically at this hotel?
Event Manager
After being selected from applications, you'll start with a phone interview. This is conducted by a recruiter from an external company, and it's basically a pre-screening. It can be a bit annoying since they don't always grasp the specifics of the role. Next, you'll complete an online assessment that focuses more on your personality and work style. The in-person interview uses the S.T.A.R. method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), so be ready with good examples to answer these questions.
- Can you share an instance where something didn't go as planned, using the S.T.A.R. format?
