Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Marley Spoon.
Software Developer
The hiring process was extremely slow and disrespectful. I had two bad experiences with Marley Spoon's hiring teams and don't recommend sending them your resume or doing their poorly designed challenge. They claim the challenge takes 3-4 hours, but it requires building a Next.js app from scratch with two views and integrating a GraphQL API, which is unrealistic. Companies that value candidates limit the scope of these challenges. The challenge was requested shortly after the HR call without prior technical screening, which is a red flag showing low commitment. My first attempt resulted in being told the position was filled, even though my work wasn't reviewed. After complaining, I got a superficial review focusing on minor code style issues. Years later, I applied again. The process was a mess, including a missed technical interview where the hiring team didn't show up. It was rescheduled for a week later and went well, with positive feedback on design choices and FE/full-stack topics. However, another week passed without contact, and when I inquired, they replied another week later with a rejection, offering no feedback on my technical interview. Due to their sluggishness and lack of respect, I won't apply again and will share my experience.
- Can you explain your approach to the challenge?
- Let's debug a small issue in the code you submitted.
Software Engineer
The whole process took less than 2 weeks. It started with an HR screening for 30 minutes, followed by a coding challenge the next day. After submitting the coding challenge, I was directly invited to a technical interview. Then, three culture and value interviews followed. I got answers to my questions immediately. So, I can only describe the experience as positive.
- Tell me about your past behaviors in previous roles.
Senior Software Engineer
The process was pretty straightforward. I only got through the first two stages. The first is a screening call with a HR representative and then there's a ruby on rails api integration take home project that you're required to complete in under three hours. There's no hard deadline tho and the requirements are a bit subjective.
- What is your reason for leaving your current job?
