It was fine. I talked to four different people for about 10 minutes each. Everyone was nice. They got back to me a few days after the interview. They asked stuff like tell me about your last work experience, where do you see yourself in 5 years, and what is your experience with Excel.

Over the course of a month, I had several phone interviews which were quite informal. This was followed by a lunch meeting with management. The phone interviews focused on discussing my previous role, my motivations for joining Marcum, and work-life balance. It was a very relaxed and straightforward process with minimal structure, and they didn't delve deeply into specific skills. The main goal seemed to be assessing cultural fit with the firm.

Applied online and also did some outreach. The role is in valuation and litigation services at Marcum, a mid-sized accounting firm. The valuation department is a bit unique as it doesn't heavily favor accounting majors or CPAs. The work involves valuing businesses and assets for high-net-worth individuals, including a significant divorce practice where they assess asset worth for division. This is quite different from traditional accounting. During my interview, the focus was mainly on assessing fit – understanding the work, career aspirations, and reasons for choosing Marcum. If you nail this, other aspects are less critical. The firm seems to be facing turnover and staffing challenges, making fit a top priority. HR did a good job, which is unusual for me as I generally dislike dealing with HR. This was with the Saddle Brook office.

We started with an initial phone screening, asking some simple behavior questions. Then we had group interviews with a Manager and Senior, where they reviewed my experience and asked why I was interested in Marcum LLP. The final round was group interviews with the Partner in Charge and Senior Manager, where they really wanted to get to know me as a person. I got the offer a few days later.
