Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Marathon Petroleum.
Chemical Engineer
It started with a quick phone call, then there was a virtual panel interview that wasn't technical. They asked situational questions to check out my time management and past experiences.
- Tell me about a time you had an overwhelming workload and had to decide what to do first.
Chemical Engineer
I first connected with a recruiter at a university career fair. After a few days, I received a phone call to schedule an interview. The interview itself was a pretty standard affair, with a lot of questions and note-taking. It was conducted by an HR representative and a chemical engineer. The engineer asked all the questions, creating a dynamic where the HR person was friendly and the engineer was more direct and hard to read. The interview was entirely behavioral. It took about 4 months for them to follow up.
- Can you share an instance when you failed to meet a deadline?
Chemical Engineer
There were four people that interviewed me, two from HR and two engineers. The interview wasn't too bad overall. Just make sure you're ready for common interview questions. It started with a friendly welcome and some getting-to-know-you questions. Then, they asked me to emphasize the key parts of my resume. After that, each interviewer asked me one or two questions. Nothing unusual.
