First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Marathon Petroleum.
Marketing Intern
The interview was pretty by the book. They asked standard questions about my school and work background, focusing on teamwork. It's important to do your homework on the company and the industry. Knowing Marathon's mission and values would be a plus. The recruiters were direct and a bit intense, but the whole thing ran smoothly.
- Can you share an experience of working on a project with a big team?
- What about this role specifically caught your attention?
Brand Marketing Intern
The interview process was super easy, no tricky questions at all. It was all behavioral, like asking about times you succeeded, had conflicts, or led others. They really want you to know your resume. Having a prior internship isn't a must, but being kind, respectful, and outgoing is key. Your personality is what gets you the job here, not just past experience. It's a campus interview that lasts about 30 minutes with two interviewers. You should hear back in 1-2 weeks if you get an offer. If they ask about other offers, always say yes! Don't stress, the people at Marathon are really nice and care about company culture fit. Be yourself, but speak intelligently without being too stiff. Showing flexibility is important since the job involves a lot of travel. They ask about city preferences, be honest but say you're flexible. Being open to fall or spring internships is a plus. Marathon is a unique Fortune 50 company with a small-town feel. They look for long-term employees who do their job well and avoid trouble, not necessarily 'hot talent'. If you prefer a fast-paced environment, this isn't for you. But if you value community, a smaller town, and Fortune 50 perks (car, good salary, benefits), it's great. Marketing interns are groomed to become Territory Managers in 2-3 years, which is a fantastic opportunity with autonomy and flexibility. Career growth is encouraged with promotions every 2-3 years. Unlike other companies, Marathon's hiring decision isn't solely based on internship performance; three senior leaders who didn't interview you make the final call. A bad internship can cost you the offer, but a good one doesn't guarantee it. You'll go through the same process as non-interns for the final offer, with a 3-hour, all-behavioral interview with three senior leaders. The internship itself is a great experience, and while Findlay is small, it's close to major cities and you can make the most of it. Marathon does require a drug test. This company is a gem, and I highly recommend considering an internship.
- What are your thoughts on your biggest success?
- Can you share an instance where you faced a conflict?
- Describe a time when you demonstrated leadership skills.
Marketing Intern
I first connected with Marathon at a job fair at my school, where they mentioned they were looking for interns. Since I was looking for an internship, I gave them my resume. About a week later, I got an email to complete a HireVue interview online, where I recorded my responses. A week after that, they asked for my transcripts. I sent those over, and just a few days later, I received an offer. It was a bit unusual to get an offer without any in-person conversations or questions asked outside of a computer screen.
- All easy, behavioral questions.
