First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Major League Baseball (MLB).
Software Engineer
I first spoke with the recruiter who asked about my availability. After I gave them some dates, I didn't get an invite, but they followed up again asking for my availability. I sent my dates again, and this time they sent me a Zoom link. On the interview day, I joined the call and answered some pretty basic programming questions. The recruiter seemed happy with how I did and set up a second interview with the manager. I answered all the manager's questions during that interview, and she also seemed very positive. But after that, I never heard back about any updates. It's really disappointing how they didn't communicate or follow up.
- Can you explain what design patterns are, and provide examples of ones you've used and the issues they resolved?
Senior Software Engineer
There were a few interview stages: first, an initial coding test. Then, more detailed coding, system design, and culture fit chats. After that, a final culture fit interview with the VP. The recruiter then contacted me, indicating they wanted to proceed with an offer. We talked about salary, benefits, and a potential start date, and I was told a written offer would follow. The following week, the recruiter called again, explaining that due to a lack of approvals, they had to schedule two more interviews instead of sending the offer. These were with a Senior HR manager and the SVP. Although I thought the interviews went well, the recruiter later informed me that they had re-evaluated the role, decided to go in a different direction, and would not be extending the previously discussed offer.
- Could you build a functional Tic-Tac-Toe game?
- How would you architect a traffic light system for a city?
- Develop a chat message parser for marketing data extraction.
Software Engineer
Started with HR for standard questions. Then met the Head of Gaming for general qualifications, like passion for baseball, general knowledge, and personality/culture fit. Finally, a technical interview. About half the questions were Unity specific, the other half were math. It's surprising how much math was involved, even though the job posting said vector math was a plus. You can't pass the technical interview without knowing your math, so there was some inconsistency there. I really enjoyed everyone I talked to, hope you make it through.
- Can you explain Quarternions?
- Tell me about algorithms.
- What do you know about inverse rotations?
