Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Madewell.
Retail Assistant
It was easy - just a quick phone call with a manager. They got back to me fast after the interview. They asked a bunch of basic questions about me, when I can work, and why I want the job.
- What's your availability looking like?
Cashier
I had my interview in the middle of the store, with shoppers all around, which felt a bit like they were judging my answers. The interviewer was really nice and didn't ask too many basic questions. Instead, she told me a lot about Madewell, the company's mission, and the target customer for their clothes. I don't have prior retail experience, and I think my college schedule might have also been a reason I didn't get the job, but I really liked the vibe at Madewell and would have loved to work there.
- What attracts you to Madewell?
- How would you handle a situation with an upset customer?
- Are you available to work on Black Friday?
Retail Associate
The interview was pretty laid-back. Started with a phone call, then I went in to meet the manager in person. It was mostly behavioral, not so much about my actual retail work. After I got the offer, the onboarding stuff was a bit messy.
- Can you tell me about any previous retail experience you have?
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
- What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
