First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Lutron Electronics.
Mechanical Engineer Intern
It was a pretty straightforward interview, with a mix of behavioral and technical questions. They were interested in how I would approach designing a shelf, specifically asking about the design process itself and any potential failure points. They also asked about the general stages involved in mechanical design.
- Can you explain how you would design a shelf?
Mechanical Engineer
The interview lasted about an hour and was a technical interview, even though that wasn't stated beforehand. It was a pretty chill and nice chat. I had to draw on a digital whiteboard and answer questions about engineering stuff.
- Can you explain the different modes of heat transfer?
- For example, how does heat transfer from a coffee cup?
Mechanical Engineer
First I spoke with the hiring manager, who has been at Lutron for over ten years. This was to discuss my background and what the job entails. Then, there was a technical interview where two engineers and I tackled some electrical and mechanical problems related to Lutron's products, involving digital whiteboarding and calculations. This was followed by a peer interview with someone at a similar level, and then an interview with management. Overall, the process was well-organized and more technically challenging than other interviews I've had, though the manager seemed a bit unprepared, which was unusual.
- Given a diagram of a lighting circuit, can you identify its components and explain their characteristics?
- Regarding a photo of a dimmer switch, which part is primarily responsible for heat generation?
