Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at LUSH North America.
Manager
First, I had an hour-long phone interview with a manager and an HR representative. They asked me questions for about 40 minutes, and then I had about 20 minutes to ask them questions. About two weeks later, I was invited for an in-person interview. This lasted about 3 hours, and it included a tour of the facilities. After that, I spoke with a colleague and the manager.
- Can you describe your experience in a similar role and any challenges you encountered?
- What is your approach to presenting a case for approval to upper management?
Manager-In-Training
First, you'll chat with the shop and regional managers about career growth and how to build a plan to improve your skills from your last role as a Floor Leader/supervisor. Then, do a self-assessment of your current skills, behaviors, and any in-store projects you've done (like team building or sales driving). Submit this self-assessment with your cover letter and resume. If the hiring manager and regional manager are local, the interview will be in person; otherwise, it'll be over the phone. You'll hear back within 5 business days, and if you don't get the job, you can ask for feedback on your interview and skills.
- Considering your background as a Floor Leader with a long-tenured team, what challenges might you encounter as you step into a Manager-in-Training role?
- Can you share an instance where you received feedback? Describe your reaction and subsequent actions based on that feedback.
Assistant Manager
I applied online and was contacted by a recruiter 3 days later to do a video interview. Two weeks later I was told to go into any Lush store and do a secret shop and tell them all of their opportunities on how they could improve their business from a customer service aspect. It involved a 4 page long survey. Two weeks after that I had a phone interview with the recruiter and we spoke in-depth about how Lush could improve to make the customer experience even better. We also spoke about how I developed someone and how I would drive sales on the floor. She said she would get back to me later in the week or after the long weekend. When I hadn’t heard anything during the week I sent a follow up email and was informed they were “very lucky to have many qualified candidates for the position” and that they were going to move on with someone else. As someone said in a previous review this seems to be their form of free market research and I agree. Thinking back 3 of the 4 Lush locations in Toronto were either hiring an assistant or a store manager, all around the same time. Maybe they needed people to apply for the position for their research before the holiday season. While it wasn’t difficult, it was one of the most time consuming interview processes I’ve ever been through. It definitely kind of put me off of Lush.
- Can you share an instance where you had to provide coaching to an employee whose job performance was subpar?
