First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Luno.
Software Engineer
So first, there was a take home coding test for the web applications role. It was mostly javascript, CSS, and just general problem solving stuff on Hackerrank. Then, I did a peer programming session with some of the lead web engineers. We used a Hackerrank editor to solve problems while I explained my thinking and answered their questions. Finally, I had an interview with the engineering manager. This was more of a culture fit type thing. I answered questions about my past experience, how I work with others, how I've handled difficult situations with tasks or expectations, and talked about Luno's "moontalities" – their core values – and gave examples of when I've shown them.
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a coworker.
Software Engineer
HR reached out saying I might be a good fit. They didn't give many details about the role, just asked if I was interested. I said yes, and they sent me a problem-solving test on HackerRank. Two senior developers helped me out with it even though I might not have done great. HR then told me I was moving on to a system design interview and even gave me some tips. But it wasn't a system design interview at all; it was another coding challenge on HackerRank with three team leads. One of the team leads then basically picked apart my experience and past projects. He wasn't very nice and kind of discouraged the others from continuing. The whole experience felt like I was just a number, and I didn't feel excited about working there. I expected more from a company like this.

Software Engineer
There were 3 interview steps. First, a 30-minute HR interview. Second, a 1.5-hour live coding and tech questions session with 3 developers. Third, a 1-hour interview with many practical tech and non-tech questions, plus personal questions. They lied about the salary, initially offering high salaries, but after 2 weeks of interviews and waiting, they offered only 50% of the initial amount.

- How would you optimize code?
- Do you have any questions about optimizing code?
