Shift Supervisor
The interview was over the phone, but it was still pretty tough. I talked with managers from different levels, most of whom I hadn't met before. You need to be ready to give specific stories about challenges you've handled. They really want you to use the STAR method for your answers. Also, expect them to question you further after you answer.
- Can you share an instance where you de-escalated a situation involving a challenging customer?
- Tell me about a time you introduced a new procedure and what the outcome was.
- Provide specific examples of challenges you've encountered and successfully managed.
Supervisor
I applied for a management position for a new store opening and was contacted within a week or two for an interview with the store manager of the new location. She was very pleasant and passionate about the company. The interview was intense but if you have management experience, it's nothing out of the ordinary. Questions about numbers and scenarios dealing with associates and customers, and then some role-playing. The role-playing was the easiest part! I do it daily in my current management position so I had no problem with it. After the interview, she contacted her DM and set up a face-to-face interview a week later. The DM was just as awesome as the SM! She asked more detailed questions about my current responsibilities and then more role-playing! Although she was a very difficult customer, I was able to win her over! My references were contacted, and I was given an offer within a few days! I am very excited about this opportunity because they seem to truly value their employees and promote within. The store manager, assistant, and other supervisor are all internal promotions or transfers for the new store opening! And the manager seems like she's going to be a great mentor, as well as the DM.
- How would you coach an employee who is focused on tasks rather than customer interaction?
- What would you do if that employee pushed back, saying they already greeted the customer and they were just looking?
- Share an instance where you exceeded expectations to help a customer.
Supervisor
I sent my resume and cover letter to the store and got a call the next day to set up an interview. The store manager (SM) interviewed me, starting with the usual 'tell me about yourself.' I talked about my current and past work experience, why I wanted the PT Sup job, and my future goals (growing with the company). Then she asked more questions about my current role, focusing on personal and store KPIs, accountability for myself and others, and coaching. We also did role-playing for coaching an employee and interacting with customers both with and without product knowledge. After that, the SM called to set up a phone interview with the district manager (DM), which covered work experience and KPIs.
- How would you address an associate who isn't engaging with customers?
- In your opinion, which KPI is most crucial, and what's your reasoning?
- Can you explain what holding someone accountable entails?
