Getting your references checked is a bit much. They have a third party collect essays from your references, asking about dates you worked together and if they'd re-hire you. When you ask someone to be a reference, they probably think it'll be a quick 5-10 minute call, not a 30-minute survey. They need at least 3 references, which is a lot to ask of anyone, especially a former employer from years ago. This might even happen before the actual interview.
