Data Scientist
It started with a quick chat with a recruiter about basic stuff like location, job title, pay, and your general tech/leadership background. A bit of a strange start because they hadn't quite settled on job titles and pay grades yet. I was offered a role at a lower pay band than advertised (£71k), and only found out the lower band was £53k when I specifically asked - quite a significant difference. Then, there was a one-hour interview with two engineering folks. About 20-25 minutes was spent on a data design problem, focusing on metrics and anomaly detection. The other 30 minutes involved five questions related to their values, centered around my data experience. The way they asked questions was a bit unclear and misleading; they asked very broad questions, initially telling me to focus on the overall process and my actions, but then immediately saying my answers were too high-level and they wanted specific metrics, success criteria, methodologies, and actual numerical results. This was mentioned multiple times, even though they also brought up timekeeping several times. Six minutes per value question isn't much time for such detailed answers, especially for a senior technical role. The values-based questions about data didn't seem to naturally fit the categories they listed online, making it hard to provide relevant examples based on the website info. Also, at least three of the values were very similar, so you need plenty of distinct examples. Trying to fit their questions into their stated values felt like a real stretch. They said I'd hear back in two weeks, but I got a generic rejection email in four days. Guess it was a definite no! I'd have found the interview easy if the questions hadn't been so vague and if the specific questions for their values had aligned better with data experience and their online descriptions. The whole approach didn't leave the best impression, but I'm glad it wasn't a drawn-out, stressful process with multiple tests and people involved for the same little feedback. Honestly, it feels like I dodged a bullet!
- Describe an end-to-end data design task, including classification and anomaly detection, emphasizing metric specification and anomaly detection.
- Tell me about a time you had to weigh up costs when designing a data pipeline.
- How do you approach engaging with stakeholders?

So we had coding tests with 2 easy-to-medium leetcode-like questions and 1 Medium-to-hard SQL query. Then there were data science and stats questions, mostly stats and traditional ML questions. It was followed by a behavioural part, similar to other companies. Lastly, a video interview, which was also behavioural.
- Tell me about a challenging accomplishment where you worked with others. What was your approach?
- How did you collaborate with others to achieve a difficult goal?
- Describe a challenging achievement and how you worked with others to get there.

The interview process had two parts: a technical interview and a soft skill assessment. The technical part was pretty easy, touching on general data science stuff but not too deep. The second interview seemed to be about seeing how I'd handle tough situations. All in all, it was a pretty good and direct process.
- Could you explain some data science concepts like classification, PCA, and NLP?
