Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Lidl.
Area Manager
Very interactive and interesting. They create challenging situations. They give the opportunity to interact with other candidates as a team. They place great importance on motivation and commitment. Pay attention to the details in the descriptions.
- How would you handle managing staff in a new Lidl location?
Shift Supervisor
It was a phone call interview for a new store grand opening, about 10 minutes long. This was back in 2020 during COVID-19, so it wasn't too tough. When I first started, there were about 25 team members, and after a month, we lost about 10 of them.
- How many days are you available to work?
- Can you tell me about your career history?
Area Manager
The interview process started with an assessment day that led to a boardroom-style interview with directors. It was quite informative and I was invited back for another interview. However, the second interview was a complete waste of time. Instead of placing me in the area management program, they recognized my potential and only offered me an assistant manager role in one of their stores, with the promise of quick progression. This was despite me already being a store manager and having won store manager of the year. They claimed I didn't have enough experience for the graduate program, which is ridiculous considering it's a graduate job and experience shouldn't be a factor. I later found out the position went to an internal employee who wasn't even a graduate. My impression is that the graduate program is a way to get top graduates in, have them manage stores in lower roles, and then make false promises of rapid promotion. It feels quite unethical.
- Can you tell me why you are interested in Lidl and what you can bring to the role?
- How do you approach managing your team?
- Regarding the expectation to work more than 50 hours per week, what are your views on that?
