First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Leeds City Council.
Occupational Therapist
I was asked to do a scenario before the interview and then they asked me about the outcome of that at the start. Then there were 5 more questions, which they said verbally and wrote down. They let me elaborate on my answers at the end and also ask my own questions. I asked about the rotations and if I could pick my preference. They told me the rotation areas mentioned in the ad were wrong. A few days later, they called and said I did really well and would have been hired, but they only had one spot. I asked for feedback, and they said they'd call back later that day. I didn't hear back by 16:30, so I called them. They said they were too busy and asked when they could call. I told them I was free anytime the next week, and they said they'd be in touch. I never heard from them again, which was really disappointing and I think I left a bad impression. Not following up on promises doesn't seem like good company values.
- Could you explain what equality and diversity means to you, and how you would incorporate these principles into your work as an occupational therapist?
Housing Advisor
The interview process was really bad. The group exercises felt pointless because everyone talked over each other. A person from LCC was assigned to each group and instead of taking notes, they kept interrupting our conversations and asking me questions to make me look bad. The HR allowed some females to dominate the tasks and discussions. The LCC guy seemed to favor the younger, university-type females, which made me feel like it's a 'face fit' culture. I saw that the LCC guy wasn't taking notes on his notepad. It felt like they deliberately chose people they could socialize with, and that's why our council is struggling - they're hiring based on looks rather than skills and experience.
- If you were in a lifeboat, who would you choose to save?
Social Worker
The interview was held online because of the pandemic. My internet connection had some issues but it was okay. They asked fair questions and I had to review a case scenario. I was given enough time to answer and when I said something a bit off, they helped me out and clarified what they wanted to know.
- What is the importance of informal carers in adult social care?
Administrative Assistant
I applied online and was invited to a JobShop event. There, I had to do an assessment testing my Excel, Word, and admin prioritization skills. The tasks were pretty simple, like copying a Google image into a Word document, and I had 30 minutes for 8 tasks. After waiting two weeks for them to score my assessment, I received an interview invitation for the following week. The interview was face-to-face and quite enjoyable because the people were very nice. I heard back about the outcome about a week later, though they mentioned it would normally be sooner but was delayed due to staff sickness.
