First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at LEE.
General Ledger Accounting Manager
I was directly contacted by the hiring manager and scheduled for a 3-person panel interview the following week. The panel included the chief of staff, accounts payable manager, and a director of finance. The interview was straightforward, with questions focused on the specific requirements of the role. I received a generic rejection email about a week later after asking for an update. The email stated feedback would be provided upon request, but it's been over a week and I've received nothing. This lack of communication is unprofessional and unacceptable.
- What functional cost is most important for a donor to see on a financial statement?
Manager
I had three interviews that each lasted about an hour. I thought the questions asked and interviews themselves lacked authenticity, and I didn't get a genuine understanding of the culture and passion at LEE. The questions were basic and didn't dig deeper. My interviewers weren't engaging, and it was hard to be myself because it was too formal. They didn't seem interested in getting to know me as a person or assessing my personality beyond checking boxes. I wished for some laughter or realness to break through the forced atmosphere. The assignments felt long-winded and didn't allow my true self to shine through, making me focus on finding the 'right' answer instead of a creative, strategic one. My advice is to be more genuine, tell the story of LEE, and describe the culture better. Laugh a little, because candidates want authentic places, not stuffy companies.
- What is your minimum salary requirement?
Vice President
This recruiting process was way too long and stressful, I ended up withdrawing after three months because of how bad the communication and follow up was from the recruiter. They gave me an assignment they said would take 3-4 hours but it really took all day to do right. The assignment was to create deployment-ready action plans for three current challenges LEE is facing. I argued against it because it was too much and they let me do the assignment based on my past work instead. They never gave me any feedback or acknowledged the assignment I turned in. All in all, I had two interview sessions with four different people over seven weeks. I was supposed to fly to NYC to meet with the executive director two weeks after my last interviews. But, a week before that meeting, no one had confirmed flights or anything. I asked the recruiter about the meeting, and he emailed back saying the executive director had a scheduling conflict and the meeting was postponed, and someone would contact me soon to reschedule. It's been three weeks since then, and that's the last I've heard from LEE. This kind of drawn-out recruitment process and poor communication really says a lot about the company culture and leadership. Too many red flags, so I had to leave the process.
- How would you approach building trust within the team?
Director
I submitted my application in June and the entire process spanned about three months. It kicked off with a few phone interviews and included a writing assignment. After that, there was another phone interview, and then an in-person meeting to wrap things up.
- Could you share your experiences on scaling projects and the obstacles you've encountered?
- How have you communicated challenges to leadership or colleagues during project scaling?
