Sales Development Representative
I went to a LaunchSource career combine on July 22nd. It's a cool event where job seekers can meet employers in a "Shark Tank" style setting. The companies introduce themselves and talk about why they're great places to work, then each candidate gets a 5-minute interview with company reps during the combine. If companies are interested, they'll reach out to move forward to an in-person interview. The LaunchSource staff were really friendly, professional, and knew their stuff. The combine environment isn't competitive; they're genuinely there to help you find a good job. I'd definitely recommend a LaunchSource combine.
- Tell me about a time you disregarded advice from someone you respected. What was the context, why did you choose not to follow their advice, and what was the outcome?
BDR
I sent in my application and heard back from them the next week. It was an okay experience overall. LaunchSource, which I think is a placement agency that boasts about placing BDRs at startups, didn't really do that for me. They work with a few companies and focus on retention. My experience was just okay and they didn't help much. The feedback was not very critical or useful. They're good at marketing, and some people have gotten jobs, but it seems to be only the really smart ones, which makes it hard for people with potential to find jobs. They should also make sure candidates aren't traveling too far for interviews, like over 300 miles, especially when there's no guarantee of a job.
- Tell me about your personality and how it makes you a good salesperson.
Sales
You start with a phone interview and then get invited to an interview day. There, potential employers watch you do different tasks and problem solving stuff. LaunchSource will let you know in a few days if the company wants to continue the interview process. Then, that company handles the final interviews at their office. If they hire you, LaunchSource will train you before you start.
- What makes you want to start a career in sales?
BDR
I went to a combined interview event on July 22nd where I got to speak with two companies. I appreciated the one-on-one time, though I wish there had been more companies. It was nice that it wasn't a group interview, so it didn't feel high-pressure or competitive. Definitely research beforehand! I actually got a job offer from one of the companies after the event, and the training is time-consuming but worth it. I'm glad I went and did the training. This is the way to go if you're looking for an entry-level sales role in upstart tech companies in Boston, but it's not worth your time if you're not.
