First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Language Services Associates.
Medical Interpreter
It was a phone interview in Brazilian Portuguese, asking about medical terms in both Portuguese and English. It involved interpreting a medical consultation with various terms using consecutive interpretation. They evaluated accuracy, tone of voice, fluency, and how the conversation flow was managed.
- What does 'blader/gallblader' mean?
- What does 'bexiga/vesícula' mean?
- What does 'NICU' mean?
Interpreter
The interview process felt unnecessarily long and complex. It seemed to focus more on technical specifications than on actual interpreting abilities. Despite my setup being fully functional with other services, they pushed for additional, non-essential equipment. They also required a test, which felt redundant given my extensive background in professional interpreting. It felt more like navigating obstacles than a genuine assessment.
- They repeatedly inquired about my technical setup, even though it already met professional standards and functions correctly with other interpreting platforms.
Full-Time Position
The recruiter was disorganized during the initial phone interview. It only got worse from there. I was invited on site for a second interview and met with a set of individuals who were unfamiliar with my qualifications and hadn’t so much as glanced at my resume before hand. They were clearly disengaged and struggling to come up with relevant questions. Considering the care and time I invested in preparation for my interviews, the disorganization and apathy I encountered revealed a basic lack of respect and professional courtesy that no job applicant deserves.
- Can you tell me about your background?
- Why are you interested in this particular job?
Medical Interpreter
So I applied with my CV and had an email exchange with the BA HR office, and they got back to me with a job offer pretty fast. Then, a US HR recruiter called me twice on the phone to lay out the recruitment process, which was super clear, and they answered any questions I had quickly and precisely. After that, I had to do two medical interpretation assessments, one written and one oral. The US tech team also reached out to check my technical setup. I then had two interviews with the managers from the US Interpreter team; they were really nice, polite, and seemed genuinely excited. They also gave me a quick training on the system. I had to submit my background check reports (criminal and credit) and sign a confidentiality agreement. I started working, and then got the formal contract about a week later. The BA HR team wasn't as quick to respond as the US team, but overall, I'm really happy with how things turned out.
- Questions about medical interpretation protocols and terminology were asked.
