The interview was on Skype. They asked me to give a short summary of my background and to download a program to check my internet speed. Then, I had to do a short demo lesson using materials they sent me a few days before. I got good feedback and was told I passed. The whole thing took around 30 minutes. It was a good experience overall, though the demo video they sent didn't perfectly match the lesson I was asked to teach. Luckily, they have the right materials on their YouTube channel, so it wasn't a major issue.

Instructions weren't clear on who calls whom, leading to a long wait and missed connections. I had to initiate contact multiple times. It felt like they expected perfection without adequate guidance or training, which is unlike real teaching where we adapt and support students. I was told I talked too much and should use a method (TPR) that felt a bit awkward. While some feedback was useful, like correcting pronunciation, other points like having a nicer background seemed minor, especially when I was disappointed not to have a chance to re-do the lesson after receiving corrections.

To start, I had to send in my resume and other papers. Then I reviewed some teaching slides on their site. After that, I added a recruiter on Skype for our scheduled interview and demo lesson. During the interview, they asked about my teaching background and qualifications. They also asked if I was available to work six days a week during their busy times, keeping in mind the big time difference between China and where I live in the US.

  • Do you have a TEFL certificate?
  • Are you able to commit to working six days a week during peak hours, given the 13-hour time difference between Beijing and the Eastern U.S.?

This interview process gives you unlimited time to prepare; I spent about 2 days on it. It felt pretty casual. They asked me to talk about my education and TEFL experience for 5-10 minutes and then do a 10-minute demo lesson, acting like the recruiter is a child, though it might run a little long. Take your time! Use games, props, and create a good atmosphere. I got good feedback, so hopefully, I get the job, but I haven't heard back yet after 6 days.
