First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Kohler Co..
Mechanical Engineer
I met with recruiters at a career fair. The top 10 applicants got invited to a group dinner with other applicants and current employees. It was pretty casual, and we talked about our interests, hobbies, past experiences, and what we hoped to gain from the internship. Two people out of the 10 were offered positions and accepted. The offers were extended the morning after dinner. They really cared about teamwork and social skills, believing technical skills can be taught on the job. They liked seeing interest in the position and a strong desire to do well.
- Would you be interested in and feel prepared to work with the team that could potentially be assigned to you?
Mechanical Engineer
I applied for the Kohler co-op role online and heard back about two months later. The interview was set for about three weeks after that. It was a panel interview over webcam with eight managers. They admitted it was only their second time doing a webcam interview, and it showed. Lots of 'could you repeat that?' happened on both sides. I got the callback about three weeks after the interview.
- What are your five-year career goals?
- What motivates your interest in Kohler?
- Which do you find more effective: individual work or teamwork?
Mechanical Engineer
The initial HR recruiter I spoke with seemed to have very little information about the specific mechanical engineering role, including its purpose, any available training, or the day-to-day responsibilities. It's tough to be evaluated for a position when the interviewer isn't clear on what the job entails. I felt like the interview's outcome was decided early on when the recruiter focused heavily on confirming my current salary and my desired compensation. It's unrealistic to expect someone to take on a senior role for very little pay.
- What is your current salary?
- What are your salary expectations?
