About a month after applying, I got an email from a recruiter for an interview. I went through a typical recruiter screen before moving on to the hiring manager. The interview with the hiring manager was pretty unengaging, more of a conversation, which might be their style. I gave detailed responses, but the feedback was weak, like the guy just woke up. It took about a week to hear back, which is too long. I had to follow up for feedback, which is normal nowadays. I got a generic rejection like 'tough decision,' 'lots of qualified applicants,' 'high competition.' It's sad that companies still mention the swollen labor market. Basically, they're hiring senior people who will leave in a year for a high base salary instead of people who want to learn and grow. That's the job market now.

It's the usual dance of the same round of questions. When they ask their questions, you know what they want to hear. The first interview is a typical interview question, they are just reading from a paper. This is more about the skills and what you bring to the table. Kinda like trying to screen you out. The second round is more about fit. It's a more conversational style. As someone else said, have lots of questions to ask, maybe 10 questions at minimum. I guess it shows interest.

Behavioral Other

I went through two rounds of interviews. The first one was pretty standard, asking usual stuff like 'tell me about yourself,' past roles, strengths, and weaknesses. The second round was more laid-back, a chance for us to get to know each other, and for them to explain the job details. Definitely have some questions ready for that part!

Behavioral Technical

The first interview was a long, hour-long talk about the job's duties and my qualifications. It seemed to be going well until the manager started talking about salary and said I was overpaid for my current role, basically because they couldn't match my expectations. This was surprising since I'd already stated my salary needs and believe the responsibilities justify it. What's more, the manager was also messaging someone else on IM while we were talking and seemed distracted the whole time. They could have just rejected me earlier since I mentioned needing visa sponsorship in my application, which they then used as the reason for rejection. It felt like the company lacked organization and a proper recruitment process; they should really have reviewed my application thoroughly from the start.
