Assistant Manager
It was a pretty quick and easy interview process. They asked about my experience and how I'd approach selling, organizing, or dealing with a difficult customer. I was able to give general ideas and descriptions. It was easier than I thought it would be.
- Can you explain how you would market and sell this product?
- Tell me about your previous experience.
- What's your approach to organizing tasks or projects?
Assistant Manager
I had 2 interviews. The first was with a store manager who was actually transferring, and the second was with the new store manager and the district manager. The first interview was great. I was told about the job requirements, given company history, pay, benefits, and company structure. I was asked a couple of questions, and because of my background, she stopped after the second page of questions. Each question was directly related to my current position and recent challenges I'd overcome, so they were pretty straightforward. The second interview was more of a get-to-know-you interview, covering my history, my successes at my current company, and the pay difference I was willing to accept. Although there was a significant pay gap, I could regain some sanity because some jobs just aren't worth it. They were two great interviews, though, and I didn't need to negotiate pay because I'm already at the maximum for my position. I was shown the metrics, as this was part of my current job, so there was no need to mislead me.
- Can you share an instance where you had to implement a new policy you disagreed with?
- What would you say is your greatest strength?
- And what would you identify as your biggest weakness?
Assistant Manager
I had applied for the senior assistant manager position and the store manager called me to set up an interview for 10:00 AM. It was a bit strange because they opened at 10:00 AM. When I got there, she told me to look around while she got her team ready. After that, she brought in another girl and introduced her as the assistant manager, which was weird because that was the position I applied for. We did the interview right on the sales floor with customers around, so she had to keep stopping to help them. I thought it was unprofessional not to have it in a private space. She asked if I was looking for supplemental income or trying to leave my current job. I said I thought it was a full-time role with a path to store manager in a year. Then she told me the position I applied for was filled weeks ago, even though I applied last week. She offered me a part-time manager role, up to 30-40 hours a week with no benefits. The whole thing was less than 15 minutes. I drove almost 5 hours for this, expecting a full-time management job, so I left pretty upset.
- As a manager, what's an area you feel you need to improve on?
- In your opinion, what is your greatest strength as a manager?
