First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Kirkland & Ellis.
Legal Secretary
I first had a call with a recruiter from out of town. I had applied to Kirkland & Ellis over 6 months ago. After passing some tests and having several phone calls with the recruiter, I interviewed with the local HR. Then I interviewed with two partners who I wouldn't be reporting to. I didn't get the job and didn't know why. The out-of-state recruiter never called me back or replied to my messages. I emailed the recruiter in August, 2016 because they were still hiring for the same job in Houston. She sent my email to someone else who asked me questions that weren't really related to the job.
- What's your current salary?
- Did you get a bonus?
- Can you provide your W-2 from the last tax year?
Legal Secretary
I think the hiring process up to a certain point is good. It's objective and based on your resume, phone interview with the Chicago office, test scores, and interview with the local Office Manager. It didn't work out for me at the local interview with the attorneys. My "outstanding qualifications and resume" didn't matter. They decided in 20 minutes (10 mins each attorney) I wasn't the right candidate. I was disappointed because this would've been the first job I earned solely based on my qualifications and skills.
- Do you have experience handling personal matters for an attorney?
Legal Secretary
I had a phone interview with an HR person, then got invited to the next interview. It was a "round robin" style, where like 4 or 5 candidates were interviewed by about as many people from the firm (like 10 mins per person, and we rotated until we spoke with everyone). I had never seen this format before, so it caught me off guard.
- What do you think the most important characteristic of a successful secretary is?
