Behavioral Technical

It was a 4 stage interview process. The in-person interviews were straightforward and the interviewers were friendly. It began with a two-person interview where they asked basic job-related questions. I think one interviewer was from HR and the other was from the relevant department.

Technical Presentation

The interview process was pretty straightforward, mainly focusing on optimization and machine learning skills. After an initial email exchange, I had a technical interview that covered theoretical concepts and how to apply them. The questions were mostly about understanding modern optimization methods, algorithm convergence, and issues with gradient variance in distributed systems. It was an interactive conversation in a supportive environment.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • Can you explain the core idea behind SVRG / SAGA and how they reduce stochastic gradient noise?
  • In distributed settings, how do these methods help stabilize learning for non-convex functions?
  • Could you present the intuition behind SVRG / SAGA and stochastic gradient noise reduction, and then explain how these methods stabilize learning for non-convex functions, particularly in distributed environments?

Behavioral

Had a great interaction with the research team, they were brilliant and positive. I was told I was the preferred candidate and would get the offer. HR took a long time with my case for a few months. Then they decided not to offer the role due to two really strange reasons: 1) My child with special needs might be an issue for KAUST, and 2) My name sounds too political/religious, which might prevent me from getting a visa. I'd heard good things about KAUST but was a bit let down by how this turned out.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • What makes you want to join KAUST?
