After an initial email exchange, I had a technical interview that covered theoretical concepts and how to apply them. The questions were mostly about understanding modern optimization methods, algorithm convergence, and issues with gradient variance in distributed systems. Had a great interaction with the research team, they were brilliant and positive. I was told I was the preferred candidate and would get the offer. HR took a long time with my case for a few months. Then they decided not to offer the role due to two really strange reasons: 1) My child with special needs might be an issue for KAUST, and 2) My name sounds too political/religious, which might prevent me from getting a visa. I'd heard good things about KAUST but was a bit let down by how this turned out.
