A recruiter reached out on LinkedIn. After a coffee chat, we scheduled an in-office meeting with a couple of team members. The plan was to meet two people for up to an hour, but it ended up being three people and ran 30 minutes over. The first person was nice and we had a good chat. The second person wouldn't make eye contact and asked boring, standard questions. The third person seemed uninterested and gave a weak answer when I asked a question. It felt like an exam, with too many questions. The two team members made me feel negative about the company. Given the competition in SF, they need to improve. They also didn't follow up as promised.

Got a call from one of the partners briefly asking me to come down for an interview. Had a 1 hour interview with the hiring manager at the office lobby, most of which was spent learning about the position and asking him some questions. Got invited down for the 2nd interview, this time meeting with another associate and the CEO of the company. Had a good chat - they were trying to see if I could hold a good conversation and get a feel of my personality. They seemed pleased. Unfortunately as I did not have much time in Japan, I asked the hiring manager if he could give me a reply within a week, and unfortunately when he gave me a call, he felt he wanted to see more candidates before deciding.

Right after I applied, a recruiter reached out to me, and we scheduled a phone interview for the next day. The recruiter called exactly when they said they would, and was super friendly at the start. They laid out what to expect really clearly. We figured out pretty quickly that it wasn't the right fit for either of us, but the recruiter stayed cool and still gave me some good advice for my job search. Honestly, this internal recruiter did a great job and made it a good experience.
