First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Johnson Matthey.
Scientist
The interview focused more on demonstrating your understanding of the company's known work rather than your specific job qualifications or personal background. They wanted to see that you researched the company thoroughly. It wasn't about what you could contribute, but more about your ability to follow instructions precisely, essentially showing you could be a compliant team member.
- Details about the questions asked were not recalled.
Senior Scientist
It was good. Two rounds. The first round was a technical online interview. The second round was in person, with HR and technical components. They asked about my background and experiences. They also touched on EHS and asked for examples of my previous work. There were also a few personal questions.
- What are the applications for materials?
- Could you give some examples related to safety?
- Tell me about your background and experiences.
Chemist
Applied online. Received questions via email. Had a phone interview. Then an in-person interview where they asked about my work history and gave a building tour. Got called back for another interview with HR, which was behavior-based. HR recorded my responses. Then they called again to verify references and emailed a question sheet to my past managers. It took over two weeks for the background check and drug test results to come back, and they said they couldn't offer salary/position until everything cleared. HR seemed to not know what they were doing. The whole hiring process took over a month after the initial offer stage. I was offered 3 other jobs by the time they finally made their offer.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to manage a difficult employee and explain your approach?
