The interviewer asked some really good questions that made me think hard about my past experiences. I felt a real connection and left feeling excited about the job. It was just me and the interviewer, not a group.

Got hired for a job with really low pay and no chance of raises. They didn't tell me about extra job duties beyond what was in the description, like the fact that it's a 9-hour day, a 12-month year instead of 10, and that there are no cost of living increases. Promotions seem to be based on who they like, not on merit or how long you've been there. Management is passive-aggressive and they expect us to clean the center ourselves to avoid hiring custodians. They have an attitude that 'everybody is replaceable.' Also, male trade instructors get paid double what female NY State certified academic instructors make. I was hired under many false pretenses.

Once EMC took over the contract, I was re-interviewed by a representative of EMC. That's when I first got a sense of what kind of company they were. The interview was unlike any I'd experienced before. The interviewer made me feel small, like I didn't bring enough to the table, implying that over 10 years of teaching experience wasn't sufficient for the Phoenix Job Corps Center role.
