First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at JLR.
Buyer
The interview process was pretty odd. It started off well, I applied and got an email for a telephone interview the next week. I was told it would be a 20-minute call on Tuesday, but it ended up being a 6-minute unscheduled call on Thursday, with no heads-up. The interviewer asked basic questions like 'why JLR?', so it was pretty standard and informal, ending with questions about my start date and salary expectations. A week later, I got an email confirming a face-to-face interview the following week. That's when things went south. My friend, who's a supplier at JLR, told me to get there an hour early. I got to the car park at 11:45 AM for a 1 PM interview, but didn't get through security until 12:30 PM. The security staff were helpful, but the whole setup was disorganized and gave a bad impression of how they operate. After a shuttle ride, I got to reception 15 minutes early but had to wait until 12:35 PM for someone to get me. The interview started okay with some small talk and introductions to the department head. Then, an HR person joined. They seemed nice, but once the questions started, it turned into an intense interrogation. The questions were standard, but it was a one-way street; they just read from papers and I basically just gave my answers. For instance, when I explained overcoming an obstacle with stock management, they just said 'Ok, next question' without any real feedback. My interview, supposed to be an hour, ended up being much shorter because of this. I've been a Buyer for 10 years, so I know standard answers to standard purchasing questions, like selecting a new supplier. The whole experience felt like I was just filling in boxes. I found out I didn't get the job by checking the careers site, seeing it was listed as 'filled' four days before my interview. My advice is to get there way earlier than you think, factor in lots of buffer time for shuttles, and be ready to talk a lot because it's not a back-and-forth conversation.
- Can you tell me about a challenge you faced at work and what the result was?
- Describe your process for choosing the right supplier for a new component.
- What are the key challenges you see JLR facing in the current automotive industry?
Procurement Specialist
You start by applying online and completing some tests. After that, if you pass, you're invited to an assessment centre. At the assessment centre, I participated in a group task where we had to collaborate, share information, and reach a decision within an hour. Following the group activity, there was a lengthy one-on-one interview with a senior manager. The process also included a mock role-play where I was given 15 minutes to calculate procurement costs using provided data, and then I had to engage in a procurement negotiation with a simulated client.
- Can you describe an instance where you encountered a difficult task and explain your approach to resolving it?
Purchasing
I applied on the website and got invited to do some online tests within 24 hours. The test had 3 parts: numerical, logical, and verbal. Each part was timed, with info on the left and 4 questions each. Soon after, I was invited to an assessment centre day, which ran from 8am to 1pm. An external company was running it, but the interviewers were JLR staff. Nobody seemed to know if a group exercise was planned. The day had 3 parts: a behavioural interview, a technical interview, and a group exercise. The interview questions were pretty much the same, focusing on how well you could show their 'High Performance Behaviours'. For the group exercise, we had 15 minutes to read a 5-page booklet, then another booklet with six different scenarios. We were told just 3 minutes before the end of this prep time that we should have been preparing an argument for one of the scenarios. We all rushed to pick out data, but it was tough in just 3 minutes. The external company didn't tell the JLR interviewers, who came in 3 minutes later, which left us unprepared for the discussion. We then had 40 minutes to discuss and decide, with the interviewers watching. The whole day felt really disorganized and poorly communicated between the external company and JLR.
