First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Jive Software.
Technical Support Engineer
Applied and got a call about a week later. The job was advertised as Junior Java Engineer, but it's actually Tech Support Engineer. The call was about Jive's pay/benefits/culture. Next, I had to code an application using java and their framework, which was pretty simple. If the app worked, I'd get an in-person interview, but there was another phone screen before that. The actual interview was pretty long, with 6 different people for 30 minutes each. Only one interviewer asked technical questions about java/sql. The rest were mainly checking for character fit. Many questions were repeated, but no tricky ones.
- What are the four Java access modifiers and their functions?
Technical Support Engineer
The entire interview process was conducted in person and wrapped up in one go. Since a recruiter reached out to me, I'm guessing I skipped any phone interviews. My first time talking to Jive folks directly was face-to-face. There were two main parts to the interview. First, I met with the people who would be my managers. We chatted about me, my goals, and my previous work. It was pretty chill and informal, which made it easy to talk about my career history and where I see myself in a few years. They also wanted to see if I'd fit in with Jive's company culture, as that's a big deal for them when hiring. The second part was a technical interview with two team members to check out my skills and how I'd handle the job. They asked about my experience with debugging and troubleshooting issues, and also about my knowledge of Java and its best uses.
- How would you approach debugging a Java application if you could only use the standard Java tools on a basic system and had no other resources available?
Technical Support Engineer
I was contacted on Linkedin by a recruiter. We exchanged emails and then had a 30-minute phone interview where we discussed the position and how things work at Jive. After that, I had another phone interview with a manager, similar to the first, where we talked about my skills and why I wanted to leave my current job. Finally, I had a round table interview with the team manager and two groups of team leads. The in-person interviews were conversational and fun, not like an interrogation. The whole experience was good and straightforward. I got an offer in less than 2 weeks, which was much faster than previous jobs where it took at least a month to hear back, if at all. They saw my skills, thought I'd be a good fit, and hired me quickly.
- What type of work environment culture do you prefer?
