Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Jefferies.
Software Engineer Intern
They looked at my resume. It was quick and chill, easy questions. After a hackerrank assessment, they set up the first interview. The interviewer mentioned there would be two more rounds. They used a scoreboard for each candidate.
- Describe your approach to solving a client's problem.
Software Developer
The first interview was supposed to be with the hiring manager on-site, but they didn't show up and the front desk had no clue about it. The recruiter sorted it out and got me in with a team member. The interview went from around 9am to 2pm, and they only gave me water. Then, I had a second on-site interview, which was pretty much the same, but the hiring manager did show up at the end. After all that, I got a rejection from the hiring manager, and the reason they gave was the complete opposite of what I said and what's on my resume.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What are your strongest and weakest points?
- Can you give an example of a difficult situation you encountered and how you resolved it?
Software Engineer
This was for a Python Software Engineer role at Jefferies, a hedge fund in Manhattan. They're redoing a back office reporting system from Java/Perl to Python 3, Tornado, Docker, REST, Kafka, and Pandas. A recruiter connected me. First, I had a 30-minute phone interview. Then, I had a 4.5-hour on-site interview. About a week after the on-site, they told me I didn't do well enough on the data structures part.
- Can you write a Python class that supports constant-time insert, search, delete, and get_random operations, with uniform probability for get_random? What's the space complexity, assuming duplicates are allowed?
- Explain how to perform cross-product, inner join, left outer join, and full outer join in PostgreSQL.
- If families keep having children until a boy is born, what's the resulting boy-to-girl ratio in the country?
