It was a phone interview with one of their engineers. The questions were about Spring, web security, and some Java fundamentals. The interviewer asked some vague, open-ended questions looking for keywords. I didn't like that and kept asking for clarification, but they seemed to be following a script. It was 30 minutes of questions, but it didn't feel like they were trying to see my best, just to show off their knowledge. I didn't get a good feeling about the interview or the team.

So I had a 30 minute phone call with the hiring manager, and then a 3 hour onsite interview with some different managers. They asked me behavioral and technical questions, and also some basic stuff about my background. They kept me in the loop the whole time, and the recruiting coordinator was really clear about the feedback after each part. It took them a little over two weeks to get through it all. Overall, it was a pretty good experience interviewing with JCPenney.

First, HR or hiring managers look at applications and pick people based on their skills and experience. If you seem like a good fit, a recruiter might call you for an initial chat. They'll want to see if you're interested, if you have the right skills, and when you can start. Make sure to talk about your experience and what you're good at. If that goes well, you'll get invited for an in-person interview. This could be one or more interviews, depending on the job.
