First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at JCPenney.
Supervisor
The manager greeted me and took me to their office. It was a one-on-one interview, not a group setting, probably because it was for a supervisor role. The manager reviewed my resume and asked why I left my past jobs. They also asked about any planned vacations. Even though I said I had open availability when I applied, they still wanted to know my specific availability (days, nights, weekends) and if I'd have problems working holidays. After discussing my resume and availability, I was asked several interview questions. Finally, I got to ask my own questions. I asked about the dress code and when I'd hear back about the job. They said within a week, but I actually got a call from the manager that same afternoon about the supervisor position at JC Penny.
- Describe a situation where you encountered a challenging customer or guest.
- Can you identify three of your strongest qualities and three areas where you can improve?
- How do others perceive your anger?
Supervisor
The interview process mainly involved situational questions focused on leadership and problem-solving skills. Most questions started with 'tell me about a time...'. The interviewer had a list of follow-up questions in their packet, depending on your initial response, so be ready to expand on your answers.
- Can you describe a situation where a relationship began negatively? How did you handle it? What steps did you take to improve it, and what was the outcome?
Operations Manager
It was 3 interviews total. First a telephone screening with the recruiter, then an in-person interview with the GM at the store, and finally an in-person interview with the DM at the district office. The whole process took about two weeks - it was hard scheduling interviews during back to school season, which is understandable. The phone screening was very quick and had very basic questions. The GM makes the final hiring decision, and the DM has to approve it. You won't get an interview with the DM if you aren't the GM's choice.
- What is your motivation for applying to JCPenney at this particular time?
