First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Jagex.
Content Developer
Applied for the Content Developer role in May 2022. The whole thing took about 2 months. After I applied, HR called the next week. They said the hiring manager liked my application and wanted to set up an interview. My first interview was with two content leads. It was pretty standard, asking about me, some basic technical stuff, and why I want to work at Jagex. The week after, I got an email saying they really liked my feedback and wanted me to do a skills assessment. I had a week to do two tasks: a programming task and a design task. After I sent those in, I got another call two weeks later. The hiring manager was super impressed and invited me back for the final interviews. The last part had three interviews. The first one was with another Content Lead, the Content Dev Manager, and probably the hiring manager again. It was the same kind of questions as the first interview. The second interview was about going through my solution and explaining it. The last interview was design-focused, where I talked about my design submission and then discussed the design of another game I liked. The whole experience was fun, and everyone was welcoming. The feedback was good, just a couple of areas to work on.
- Could you explain raycasting to me, pretending I'm a rubber duck?
Content Developer
The process kicks off with Jagex's HR team handling everything via email. You'll start by sending in your CV. If it looks good, they'll send you a timed online test that covers stuff like pseudocode, game design, and your general attitude. After that, if you pass the test, you'll be invited for a full day trial at their Cambridge office. This trial has two main parts: a coding section and a design section, and there will be interviews mixed in throughout the day.
- Tell me about your strengths.
- What about your weaknesses?
Content Developer
The interview process involved three stages: an initial general interview, followed by a test that included coding and designing a game feature, and concluding with a final, two-hour interview with seven interviewers. Despite a mistake in my coding test, I was invited to the final interview, which felt like an attempt to demean me. The developers seemed uninterested in hiring or providing feedback, prioritizing their own ego. This experience significantly impacted my confidence in applying for games development roles. I was previously very enthusiastic about Jagex due to childhood memories of Runescape. I believe my qualifications, including being a top university student with some industry experience, were sufficient for the role. I hope Jagex improves its interview process in the future, offering constructive feedback or respecting candidates' time. On a positive note, the rest of the interactions were very friendly, and I had great discussions with the design team, and the leads seemed great.
- Can you mention a game that you think has issues with balance?
