I had interned as an undergrad before, and then a graduate assistantship opened up. I was offered to interview for it. To get the internship, I had to personally contact the department head, and then I interviewed in their office a week later. After working for them for half a year, I was given the chance to interview for the graduate assistantship.

You need to submit a resume and cover letter that is specific to academia. Then there was an informal 1:1 chat to talk about skills, interests, and what tech you use for the job. You gotta be flexible with your schedule cause assistantships are 1/4, 2/4, or 3/4 which means 10, 20, or 30 hours and you'll need to find time to fit it in with your classes.
