First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Intrexon.
Research Associate
I had a half-day interview. It started with my direct manager, who is a Scientist. He was pretty relaxed, gave me a tour, and we had a nice conversation. I felt like this part really depends on who your manager is and their personality. Then, I interviewed with some colleagues from my department, we chatted and I answered some questions. After that, I had interviews with people from other departments, which felt a bit unnecessary since I don't even work with them now. It felt like a waste of their time, but the interviews themselves were still pretty chill. I guess it varies depending on the role and department.
- Can you describe your experience using particular instruments?
Applications Specialist
Applied for Intrexon in March 2015 as Senior Bioinformatics Scientist. Had a phone interview with the hiring manager. Then went onsite to SSF for a long interview day (10 am to 5 pm) with various people (scientists, VPs, IT). A few days later, had another interview with a scientist from San Diego. Didn't get selected, and it took me following up twice to find out. I reapplied in September 2015 for Bioinformatics Scientist. Had a phone interview with the hiring manager in October 2015. Went onsite in November 2015. Had another onsite interview the same month and was eventually offered the Applications Specialist role in the IT group in December 2015. I was let go in September 2016. It seems like they took a long time to decide on me, interviewing me 6 times and still not keeping me.
- Can you elaborate on your past experiences, referencing your resume?
- Could you discuss your experience with X?
- Tell me about your experience with Y.
Scientist
I sent in my application and heard back from a recruiter. Then, the hiring manager reached out for a chat. About a week after that, two more researchers on the team contacted me. The following week, I went in for an interview where I met with seven other team members and gave a brief presentation about my work. They extended an offer, but it was for a different location than I had requested, so I had to turn it down.
- What are the biggest challenges facing the field?
Summer Analyst
I applied in November 2017 and got a phone screen in January. After that, I had two more phone calls with more senior employees. I was offered the position in mid February.
- Could you tell me about your favorite book and the reasons behind your choice?
