It was a 45-minute panel interview with two interviewers. We covered about 30 questions, then I had a 10-minute presentation about the role, and the last 5 minutes were for my questions. They asked about my competencies, skills, past experiences, work challenges, and my understanding of the security situation in Africa.

The interview was about half an hour long and felt very structured. All the questions were definitely prepared beforehand, and all candidates were asked the same ones. They didn't try to get to know you better by asking follow-up questions based on your answers. You were mostly expected to give a theoretical and impersonal answer. For instance, instead of talking about your past research experience, you were asked to explain the necessary steps to conduct good research. Maybe I was used to other international organizations where interviews felt more like a conversation, but I didn't really enjoy this process. I also didn't get any feedback, just a short email saying I wasn't successful.

I applied online and then Crisis Group got back to me around 2-3 weeks later. The interview was over Skype. It felt pretty chill and friendly, and they started by telling me a bit about the organization and what the internship involved. Then they asked questions mainly about my background and my research experience. They also asked about teamwork, managing different tasks, and my future career goals. I got an offer a week after that, and I accepted.
