Data Engineer
Had a really terrible interview experience, probably one of the worst. I applied via referral for a role that was advertised as Senior Data Engineer. The first and only technical round was with an interviewer who didn't seem to have enough knowledge herself. The questions were very vague, ambiguous, and confusing. I was asked to write code in the Google Meet chat. I was upfront about my salary expectations from the start. Despite this, they had me go through the entire interview process just to say they couldn't meet my salary and would only offer what I was already making, which made no sense. To top it off, they changed the role to Data Engineer without telling me, and there was no formal communication about it; it was just a phone call from HR. After I declined, HR ghosted me and hasn't responded even after I asked for a formal discussion about what we talked about on the call. Still no response. Truly one of the worst experiences.
- Could you answer some basic SQL questions about joins?
Data Engineer
It was a multi-stage interview process, quite drawn out but not difficult. In total, there were about 5 to 6 rounds, starting with an HR check, followed by a written test. Then came some hands-on practical assessments where I had to use my own laptop and perform specific tasks.
- Tell me about your understanding of SQL concepts.
- Can you describe your functional knowledge of SQL?
Data Engineer
The process began with a take-home test on HackerRank, which included 5 SQL questions and one descriptive question about GIT, with a 90-minute time limit. I found 4 of the SQL questions to be easy and one to be medium, and all my queries passed the test cases. However, HR didn't reach out for about a week, so I called them, and then they scheduled the interview. The interview itself covered basic SQL questions.
- Could you explain what data quality means?
- What's the maximum number of primary keys a table can have?
- Can you discuss indexing, including its pros and cons?
