Project Coordinator
This company posts a job for 7 days, then interviews external candidates for multiple rounds, but ultimately hires an internal candidate. This happened to me twice, and it felt like a waste of time. I was told I was a top candidate both times, but they chose someone already at the company because they supposedly had more experience with their software. It seems like they don't want to train new people or pay external hires more. So, be warned that if you get an interview, especially if a recruiter reaches out, they might just be doing their due diligence on external candidates while planning to hire internally all along. It was pretty demoralizing.
- Can you describe how you manage when you have several tasks or responsibilities to handle simultaneously?
Data Science Engineer
Started with a quick HR phone screen, which was pretty standard, super friendly and positive overall. Then I had an interview with the hiring manager, which was one of the worst interview experiences I've ever had. It was a non-technical panel interview with the hiring manager and two other team members. The hiring manager seemed distracted and not really engaged. They clearly hadn't coordinated beforehand, and the interview felt improvised without a set list of questions. It was pretty awkward with significant pauses, confusion about who should ask what, and how many questions they were going to ask. The whole thing lasted about 50-60 minutes.
- Can you explain what DevOps and SysOps mean to you?
- What's your experience with AWS services, specifically AWS Lambda?
- What knowledge do you have about the construction industry?
Software Engineer
It was a typical interview process for the industry, but not in a great way. Had several phone interviews with regular folks, followed by a Zoom panel interview with a bunch of typical programmers. They were rapid-fire asking questions, covering hypothetical scenarios to definitions, all while looking at me from their black screens. They mentioned 45 to 55 hours of work per week as 'good work life balance'.
- What are some programming tasks you'd typically use a library for that aren't directly job-related?
- How would you prepare using LeetCode?
- Can you recall obscure details from your digital logic class?
Software Engineer
After sending in my application, I got an email to set up an interview. Some people I would work with asked me questions to see if I was a good fit. A few weeks later, I got an email with their decision. If it was good, they set up another meeting to tell me about the specific role I would have.
- Can you explain Object-Oriented Programming?
- Do you understand relational databases?
- Let's do a small coding challenge to see how you solve problems.
